The electricity from the Kela Photovoltaic Power Station will not be directly connected to the power grid. Instead, it will be connected to the nearby Lianghekou Hydropower Station through a 500 kV transmission line. After being bundled with the electricity from the hydropower station, it will be connected to the power grid. , to achieve water and light complementarity.

"Water-light complementary 1+1>2"

I have heard of "fishing and light complementarity". What is water and light complementarity?

Simply put, photovoltaics can only generate stable power during the day, and the power generation reaches its peak at noon, but it cannot supply power at night. Coupled with the influence of weather and other factors, this kind of uncertainty and volatility is difficult for grid users to accept. 

3. Therefore, the combination of hydropower and photoelectricity forms a complementarity. During the day, more photovoltaics are generated, while less hydropower is generated; at night, photovoltaics are not generated, and hydropower is more generated. In the dry season of the hydropower station, more photovoltaic power generation and less hydropower generation; in the wet season, less photovoltaic power generation and more hydropower generation.

In March 2022, all units of the Lianghekou Hydropower Station will be put into operation for power generation. As the largest river basin leading reservoir in Sichuan Province, it has an installed capacity of 3GW, a total storage capacity of more than 10 billion cubic meters, and a regulating storage capacity of 6.56 billion cubic meters. It can transfer more than 6 billion cubic meters of flood water during the wet season to the dry season. At present, the world's largest hydro-solar hybrid power station is the Longyangxia Photovoltaic Power Station in Qinghai Province, with a photovoltaic installed capacity of 850MW. The start of construction of the Kela Photovoltaic Power Station will increase the scale of the global "water-solar complementary" power station to the GW level for the first time. What challenges will this bring? The Kela Photovoltaic Power Station is located in an alpine and high-altitude area, with an altitude of 4,000 to 4,600 meters, an extreme minimum temperature of -30.6°C, a maximum snow depth of 24 cm, and a maximum permafrost depth of 50 cm. The harsh construction conditions and the serious degradation of personnel and machinery have brought huge challenges to the construction of the project.

At the same time, the project has a large amount of engineering, with a site area of about 16 square kilometers, which is equivalent to the area of 80 bird's nests. It consists of more than 2 million photovoltaic modules, more than 5,000 inverters, and more than 300 box-type substations.
